Eltham Palace Gardens in 2005 The
gardens at Eltham Palace hold a fascination for me at all times of the year, it
is the mixed setting of medieval and modern that makes these grounds so unique.
The planting is informal in spring, but it is great to experience the freshness
of the early spring flowers after a long grey winter. In summer the mixed
flower borders by the southern Lawn and moat banks become a riot of
colour. |

Eltham Palace Gardens in 2006 (a brief
history). In 1935, an initial design for the gardens was produced by
Andrew Mawson and Partners for the Courtauld's. This was then modified to
incorporate ornamental plantations, shrubberies and specimen trees. The
Courtauld's were keen horticulturists and new areas were laid out including
lawns, a mixed border, a sunken rose garden, a spring bulb meadow, a rock
garden and woodland garden.
A Newly planted 120m long mixed border and
White Wood designed by Isabelle Van Groeningen, as part of the English Heritage
Contemporary Heritage Garden initiative, opened summer 2000, as can be seen
below this is now maturing nicely. |
