Saint Hill Manor, reputed to be one of the finest Sandstone
buildings in England, was built in 1792 by Gibbs Crawford, on the Saint Hill
estate established by his father John Crawford. Other owners of the property
include Edgar March Crookshank an acclaimed archaeologist, who added wings to
the Manor House, and the Maharaja of Jaipur who was the owner of the estate up
to 1959.
The final owner L. Ron Hubbard the acclaimed author and founder
of the Scientology religion, carried out much of his research into the mind and
spirit of man at Saint Hill. In the impressive library at the manor his 560
published works can be seen. Mr Hubbard aquired the estate in 1959 establishing
it as his family residence.
One of the
unique features to be viewed at the manor is the delightful one hundred foot
Monkey Mural, painted by Sir Winston Churchills nephew, John Spencer Churchill
which took three months to paint and incorporates 145 monkeys of 20 different
species. It includes a capuchin monkey portraying Winston Churchill as an
artist.
Saint Hill Manor is set in 59 acres of landscaped gardens,
woodland and lake. The Saint Hill College for Scientologists has been
constructed on the estate and is known as Saint Hill Castle. Students from many
countries attend the advanced graduate courses it offers.
Saint Hill
Manor can be found off the A22 near East Grinstead in West Sussex.
